compie stuff: out with the old, in with the new

last Sunday, before leaving for MOA with Mom and Kuya's fam, i thought of burning a dvd to free up some space. i pressed the eject button on my trusty LG GSA4163B, and it won't budge. it had happened before, so i thought nothing of it, and just manually ejected the tray using the pinhole trick.

so i pulled on the tray, and placed a blank dvd, and slided it back. light indicator was flashing, but Windows would not read the disc.  so i repeated the process about two times, when i smelled something burning.. (uh-oh!) fearing the worst, i shut off my compie. removed the drive, and the burning smell indeed came from it's innards.

*a moment of silence please*

anyways, long story short: my 4+ year old dvd-writer has finally died. it has served me well for those past 4+ years, burned Gigs and Gigs of stuff ("educational" or otherwise ), and read Gigs and Gigs of animes, movies, mp3's from several cd's and dvd's.
so the trip to MOA served another purpose: to buy a replacement for my dead writer. 1st store we entered: they were only selling one IDE writer, and it was a Sony. 2nd store: SUCCESS!

meet the newest component for my compie: the LG GH22LP20! it's a few cm's shorter than my previous writer, so it doesn't hit the PSU on my micro ATX setup. burning is a breeze with this baby (22x max!), although i've only test-burned one dvd at 16x.. plus, the black finish complements my piano black micro ATX case..

i can only hope that it will exceed the lifespan of my previous writer, and perform as well as it's predecessor did..
